I was able to finish one of the DLC trials, which gave me some hope that I would be able to revisit Rapture and put a nine-iron upside my father’s head. My first night playing it was truly terrible, crashing after merely 40 seconds on each attempt.Īfter a Windows update, I got more hopeful as the game lasted five minutes before any issues emerged. I have yet to actually get BioShock Remastered to remain open on my PC for any extended period of time. The colors are vibrant and the game runs smooth, but it also only runs for about 10 minutes at a time. I didn’t extensively play the original PC release (opting to borrow the 360 version from a friend), but I can’t tell what has really changed. For all intents and purposes, this new “remastered” version is basically a compatibility patch for newer operating systems. There were a bit of issues with some stuttering, but a quick look into INI files alleviated those issues.Īs for the original BioShock, I can’t say I’m surprised by the lack of quality in this port. It looks gorgeous, has a lot of customization options, and is basically the definitive way to enjoy the game. I did recently play Infinite and it runs like a dream. It has been covered extensively for years now. The console versions are based off of the original PC release from 2013, so there isn’t a need to go into detail about that version. Rig: Intel Core i7-3770 3.4 GHz, 16GB of SDDR MHz, NVidia GTX 1060 6GB, Windows 10 Home 64-bitįor anyone wondering why I’m not covering BioShock: Infinite, that has to do with the game not receiving a remaster on PC. BioShock 2 also suffers from issues with newer hardware, so I was hoping the remastered versions would fix most of these problems. The PC versions of the trilogy were solid, in their own right, but the march of progress has ultimately rendered the original BioShock unable to run for people on Windows 8 and above. In addition to having completely remastered textures and better framerates, the bundle compiles all three BioShock titles and every bit of DLC released for the games.

She’s planning on mentioning all of this on Tuesday night in her sermon, which is about a seeming paradox: that thinking about your death can bring you much closer to experiencing true joy. He said, ‘Remembering death in the proper way can bring a person to the ultimate joy.’” “The app is the digital version of a teaching I love from a 19th-century rabbi, Rabbi Simcha Zissel Ziv. “The fact that the app is random and comes at any moment is part of what makes it compelling,” she said. Six months ago, Angela Buchdahl, the rabbi of Central Synagogue in Manhattan, downloaded it. It pings five times every day with the message: “Don’t forget, you’re going to die.” Why five? It’s based on an apparent Bhutanese tradition, or so says the app, that suggests reflecting on death five times a day brings happiness. “We all live with a gun to our head and no one knows when it’s going to go off.”Ĭan we remain aware of the loaded gun? There’s an app for that. “There’s a wonderful quote from Sartre’s ‘The Wall’ where the guy is about to be executed and he says, ‘I lived as if I had forever.’ And the point of Yom Kippur is to remind you as forcefully as possible that you don’t have forever,” David told me. Yom Kippur is meant to perform the same function. “I had to decide, do I even still want to be a rabbi? For me it was wonderful and affirming to find out I really do,” he said. Each diagnosis, he told me, reminded him that he didn’t have forever. One of them is my friend David Wolpe, the rabbi of Sinai Temple in Los Angeles. I grasp it for a second or two, but then it escapes me and I’m back to before. Look through the death lens, and Instagram and Twitter look like nothing more than numbing agents. Jewish Year 5784: sunset Septemnightfall September 25, 2023. There’s the obvious - the plastic surgery and the digital surgery and the obsession with achieving perfect quantities of tautness and plumpness and dewiness. Yom Kippur will occur on the following days of the secular calendar: Jewish Year 5783: sunset Octonightfall October 5, 2022. It is a task that feels especially urgent in an era in which the “denial of death,” as Ernest Becker’s famous title had it, is so monumental that sometimes it seems as if the only real activity we are engaged in is closing our eyes to the truest fact about life: No one makes it out alive. The words we recite on Yom Kippur make that challenge perfectly clear: “How many will pass away and how many will be born? Who will live and who will die?” The images - of God writing us in the book of life or death, of us begging for mercy and kindness, of gates closing - are so stark and, frankly, so scary that many people want to turn away. “An Ode to a Grecian Urn” is a lengthy piece that describes the markings or the images etched on the surface of an ancient Grecian urn. “An Ode to a Grecian Urn” is a lengthy poem that describes many visual elements pertaining to a singular inanimate object, the urn and the understanding of this poem becomes quite easier with the shorter and almost similar treatment of the theme in “Ozymandias” a poem by Percy Bysshe Shelley. One such poem that seems to be ambiguous at first but read superimposed with another poem becomes more comprehensible is the poem, “An Ode to a Grecian Urn” by John Keats. However, in many cases, there are poems that tackle the same theme from a different perspective while using various poetic devices to demonstrate how a better understanding of the theme can be achieved with certain poems complementing the use of these devices in other poems. Poetry is often perceived to be the art form of the elite because of the fact that it requires critical thought and a certain level of intelligence to comprehend and appreciate. In “Ozymandias,” the context is the Romantic era: a time in which poets and painters alike sentimentalized the ancient and natural worlds.Theme of Temporality and Permanence in “Ozymandias” and “an Ode to a Grecian Urn” Analysis A poem about the ravages of time and the fallibility of human power, Percy Bysshe Shelley’s “Ozymandias” exemplifies the use of irony, imagery, and symbolism.Ĭontext matters in poetry, and indeed in all literature, providing the cultural and historical zeitgeist that aids in interpretation and understanding (Glenn & Gray, 2019). Yet the King was wrong to assume that onlookers would “despair” at the sight of his grandiosity (line 11). The King’s memory does indeed live on, told through the traveler’s tale and also through the narrator’s lips and the poem itself. Imagery of sand, sandstone, and the crumbling statue also creates the irony that is central to Shelley’s poem. Even though the sculptor offered tribute to the King, it is as if modern human beings are laughing, “mocking” just as the sculptor might have done all those centuries ago (line 8). The king whose statue is in question was once all-powerful and had commissioned whole cities and yet nothing of those cities remains. The imagery used to describe the statue is important because it reflects both the main themes of “Ozymandias.” Those themes include the passage of time and the fleeting, ephemeral nature of human power. In relaying this story, the narrator offers a frame narrative about meeting the traveler and hearing about the statue second hand. After all, the poem is about a traveler “from an antique land,” who tells the story about a crumbled statue of an ancient King who was once powerful (line 1). The poem was penned in the Romantic era in England, a historical and cultural context that captures the prevailing interest in ancient civilizations. The poem is also ironic because of the juxtaposition of eternity, represented by imagery of the “yet surviving” (line 7) statue and the “boundless” (line 13)sands, and temporality, represented by the decay.Ĭonclusion: With imagery of the eternal sands of time, into which the man-made statue crumbles, Percy Bysshe Shelley captures the ironic nature of human power and The poem is ironic because of the juxtaposition of the King’s certainty of his own power with he is now just a “colossal wreck,” (line 14).Ĭ. Irony, symbolism, and imagery converge in “Ozymandias,” creating a cohesive poetic whole.ī. Another main theme of “Ozymandias” is the fallibility and fleeting nature of authoritarian power in human societies, symbolized by the crumbled statue of a King.Ī. One of the main themes of Shelley’s poem is the passage of time, and how people from different eras perceive reality differently.Ĭ. Although brief, “Ozymandias” is a complex poem with interlocking and layered themes related to time, power, and identity.ī. The Romantic era hearkened to an idealized past, with special affection for ancient civilizations, which is why Shelley uses imagery of ancient Egypt in “Ozymandias.”Ī. Context has an important role to play in poetry due to the cultural and historical implications of the symbols and imagery used in “Ozymandias.”Ĭ. Shelley wrote “Ozymandias” during the period known as Romanticism.ī. Thesis: A poem about the ravages of time and the fallibility of human power, Percy Bysshe Shelley’s “Ozymandias” exemplifies the use of irony, imagery, and symbolism.Ī.
